Regionally, the rate of increase in fertilizer application in the central and western regions was significantly higher than the national average, to the extent of 18.9 percentage points, while the eastern region was lower than the national level of 18.9 percentage points, indicating that the center of gravity of agricultural fertilizer consumption is shifting to the central and western regions. Provinces with larger growth rates in fertilizer application for food crops are mainly concentrated in the northern, northeastern and central provinces, with Heilongjiang and Inner Mongolia being the two provinces (regions) with the highest rates.
Li Xiubin's group at the Institute of Geographic Sciences and Resources, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IGSR, CAS) published research results on the impact of land use change on fertilizer application in the Journal of Geographical Sciences, exploring the spatial and temporal characteristics of China's agricultural fertilizer consumption in the past 10 years at the regional and provincial levels.
The study found that the incremental consumption of agricultural fertilizers in China mainly comes from horticultural crops with a higher degree of intensification, rather than from field grain crops. Therefore, the traditional understanding that there is excessive fertilizer application in China's grain farming industry deserves to be revisited.
During the 10-year period from 1998 to 2008, the annual consumption of agricultural fertilizers in China increased by 12.013 million tons, of which horticultural crops represented by vegetables and fruits contributed 71.6%. In terms of the proportion of consumption, fertilizer consumption of food crops decreased from 71.0% to 57.8% during the 10-year period, while that of horticultural crops increased from 19.3% to 30.8%.
